The Beginning Vegetarian

When one is considering a vegetarian lifestyle,
there are some things that need to be taken onto
consideration. First, one must understand that
the transition to a plant based diet may take anywhere
from a few months to a few years. Changing the
way that a person eats is a significant undertaking.
Give yourself plenty of time to make the change
at your own pace. Gradual change will allow you
to learn about the lifestyle in a comfortable manner.
Secondly, meat and animal products can be a part
of a vegetarian diet. Too often, people feel guilty
about eating meat or some other animal product
on occasion and then forego the vegetarian diet
altogether. For example, many vegetarians will
eat turkey on Thanksgiving. Basically, take the
level of the diet to the optimal level that you
are capable of and allow it to mature. Interestingly,
as the level of meat and animal products is decreased
in the diet, their taste often loses appeal.
Third, educate yourself. The numerous misconceptions
regarding a plant-based diet often result in people
giving up. There are no disadvantages to consuming
a vegetarian diet compared to a meat-based diet.
Education can provide you with knowledge to pursue
the diet with passion and little hesitation.
In addition, you should clearly understand the
reasons that you desire to change. With well-defined
goals and objectives, the extra effort that is
sometimes required will not seem difficult. Define
your own reasons to ensure your success.
Finally, discover your shopping options. Success
in transitioning can be closely linked to understanding
the food options that are available to you. Local
health food stores will usually provide a wealth
of information and an understanding of available
products. Ask for a tour of the store and a description
of foods that you have not encountered before.
