Get Your Family Moving!
Courtesy of Dr. Alan Sosin
To help nourish and grow your child's brain, Dr.
Allan Sosin, the director of Sand Canyon Medical
Center in Irvine, California, suggests the following
to reap the benefits of exercising:
- Encourage your kids to play sports daily.
- Set a good example for your children by participating
in physical activities regularly.
- Make sports and working out a part of your
family's life. Playing sports with your kids
will strengthen your relationship with them and
very likely provide you with some of the greatest
pleasures of your life.
- Start kids playing sports early, setting up
a pattern of physical activity for a lifetime.
People who never got involved in sports in their
youth often find them boring and difficult when
they get older.
- Encourage an interest in non-contact sports
like gymnastics, swimming, running, climbing,
handball, golf, tennis, rollerblading, bicycling,
ice-skating or canoeing. This will ensure that
kids who don't like the rough and tumble of physical
contact can still exercise (just be sure they
wear the appropriate protective clothing and
gear).
- Don't forget dancing! It's fun and it surpasses
many sports in promoting cardiovascular fitness
and weight control.
- Consider yoga and tai chi, which offer profound
benefits for physical conditioning and stress
reduction.
